- M00This screen is your "guidance system" for CWC. From here you can
- M00select one of the puzzle functions and begin working in that section.
- M00
- M00
- M00DESIGN PUZZLE - create or modify a puzzle and its word clues
- M00SOLVE PUZZLE - work on a solution to an existing puzzle
- M00LOAD/SAVE PUZZLE - load and save puzzle designs and solutions to disk
- M00UTILITIES - print puzzles, set CWC control settings
- M00
- M00
- M00To begin a section, select one of the puzzle functions by moving the
- M00menu bar with the ARROW KEYS and pressing RETURN, or simply press the
- M00key that corresponds with the FIRST LETTER of the function's name.
- M00
- M00
- M00Pressing ESC from this screen will end CWC and return you to DOS.
- D00This screen is where you design your puzzles. You can create new
- D00puzzles from scratch, or modify existing ones that you have loaded
- D00from disk. There is no "correct" way to start designing a puzzle, but
- D00essentially you have two tasks to complete: drawing a picture of the
- D00completed puzzle, and defining a clue for each word in the puzzle.
- D00
- D00Once you have typed a word into the puzzle, you can define its clue by
- D00placing the cursor on any letter in the word, and pressing F3 for an
- D00ACROSS clue, or F4 for a DOWN clue. F5 and F6 can be used to jump
- D00quickly from word to word in the puzzle, and F7 will give you a
- D00complete list of all the currently defined clues.
- D00
- D00The PLUS KEY ("+") is a useful aid here; it toggles the typing
- D00direction between ACROSS and DOWN. This makes it easy to type words
- D00in either direction without fussing with the ARROW KEYS. Try it out.
- D00
- D00The UNDERLINE KEY (Shift hyphen) types a "pseudo letter"; a place
- D00holder for a "real" letter. If you have a favorite layout for a
- D00crossword puzzle, you can create a reuseable pattern or "template" by
- D00typing only pseudo letters.
- D00
- D00
- D00Beneath the puzzle area are several "status indicators" that provide
- D00information about the current puzzle:
- D00
- D00PUZ: - displays the name of the current puzzle
- D00
- D00DIR: - displays the current typing direction
- D00
- D00CLU: - shows the number of word clues defined for the puzzle
- D00
- D00LET: - shows the number of letters in a word (displayed only when the
- D00 word's clue is defined)
- D00
- D00CURSOR POSITION: displays the current ROW and COLUMN
- D00 position of the cursor in the puzzle
- S00This screen is where you work on a solution to an existing puzzle,
- S00just like solving a traditional crossword. To display the clue for a
- S00word in the puzzle, place the cursor on any letter in the word and
- S00press F3 for an ACROSS clue, or F4 for a DOWN clue. F5 and F6 allow
- S00you to jump quickly from word to word in the puzzle.
- S00
- S00As you display clues, the typing direction is automatically toggled
- S00for you, so you can type letters into the puzzle at any time. When
- S00you have supplied a letter for every space in the puzzle, check your
- S00answers by pressing F7. If your solution does not match the original
- S00design, CWC will cause the incorrect letters to blink.
- S00
- S00Remember that you must first LOAD a puzzle before you can work on its
- S00solution. And note also that you can SAVE and LOAD solutions
- S00independently of puzzles. This allows you to save an incomplete
- S00solution so you can work on it later, or even keep multiple solutions
- S00(with different names, of course) for the same puzzle.
- S00
- S00Have fun. (no cheating, now...)
- L00This screen is another menu that allows you to load and save your
- L00puzzles and solutions to disk. Again, select the function you wish to
- L00begin just as you did on the MAIN MENU.
- L00
- L00CWC will prompt you for a puzzle name. The name you supply will be
- L00the primary part of the disk file name. Do not supply a file name
- L00extension; CWC will append ".PUZ" and ".CLU" to puzzle designs and
- L00clues, and ".SOL" to puzzle solutions.
- L00
- L00CWC may pre-fill the puzzle name prompt for you. If that name is
- L00satisfactory, merely press RETURN to accept it. If you want to change
- L00the proposed name, you can do that by first backspacing, and then
- L00retyping. Always press RETURN to signal the end of your input.
- L00
- L00If you change your mind about loading or saving a puzzle, simply
- L00press ESC in response to the prompt and you will be returned to the
- L00MAIN MENU. CWC will let you know when your puzzle design or solution
- L00has been successfully loaded or saved.
- U00This screen is another menu from which you can print puzzles, or
- U00modify CWC's control settings. Select the function you wish to
- U00begin just as you did on the MAIN MENU.
- U00
- U00Select the PRINT PUZZLE function to produce printouts of the current
- U00puzzle. Or, move into the CONTROL section to change CWC's default
- U00settings.
- U00
- U00This menu will probably grow as new capabilities are added to CWC.
- P00This screen allows you to print your crossword puzzle designs in the
- P00traditional format, complete with numbered squares and an indexed
- P00clue list. You can even print the answer sheet. Press F3 to print
- P00the current puzzle, or F4 to print the answers.
- P00
- P00If you need to cancel a print routine after it has begun, press ESC.
- P00CWC will stop generating output and return you to the UTILITIES menu.
- C00This screen lets you change the settings that control CWC's
- C00input/output functions. These settings can also be supplied from
- C00the DOS command line, but if you need to change them from inside the
- C00program, this is where you do it.
- C00
- C00The DEFAULT DIRECTORY is the path name that CWC will prefix to
- C00puzzle file names when they are loaded or saved to disk. If you
- C00leave this path name blank, puzzles will be loaded and saved to the
- C00the current DOS directory. If your puzzles are stored in a different
- C00directory, supply that path name in response to the prompt.
- C00
- C00The default setting for DEFAULT DIRECTORY is -blank-.
- C00
- C00
- C00For PRINTER PORT, indicate whether your printer is connected to
- C00LPT1: or LPT2:.
- C00
- C00The default setting for PRINTER PORT is LPT1:.
- C00
- C00
- C00For PRINTER TYPE, indicate whether your printer supports Epson
- C00control codes, or IBM control codes. Printers that do not support
- C00either of these standards will probably produce garbled output.
- C00Note also, that the puzzles should be printed on a dot-matrix or
- C00laser printer to get the best results.
- C00
- C00The default setting for PRINTER TYPE is IBM.
- C00
- C00
- C00COLOR DISPLAY determines how CWC will use color on the screen. If you
- C00are using a color monitor, select "Y". If you are using a monochrome
- C00monitor or a "black & white" monitor attached to a color display
- C00adapter, select "N".
- C00
- C00If no value is supplied from the command line, CWC will determine this
- C00setting automatically by reading the DOS video mode.
- C00
- C00
- C00
- C00
- C00To supply these settings from the DOS command line,
- C00use the following syntax:
- C00
- C00 /D={default directory name} - load/save puzzles to
- C00 THIS directory, instead
- C00 of the current directory
- C00
- C00 /L={"1" or "2"} - use printer port LPT1: or LPT2:
- C00
- C00 /P={"E" or "I"} - use Epson or IBM printer control codes
- C00
- C00 /C={"Y" or "N"} - specify whether or not you have
- C00 a color monitor
- C00
- C00 ex. cwc /d=c:\puzzles /l=1 /p=i /c=n
-
- cify whether or not you have
- C00 a color monitor
- C00
- C00 ex. cwc
